The Rescue3 WRT Pro (Whitewater Rescue Technician Professional) course is designed for individuals who work or aspire to work as raft guides or kayak instructors. This comprehensive course focuses on providing participants with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively respond to water-related rescue situations.

What to Expect

The course content for the Rescue3 WRT Pro course includes:

Introduction to Swiftwater and Whitewater Rescue: An overview of swiftwater and whitewater environments, potential hazards, and the importance of proper rescue techniques and equipment.

River Hydrology and Dynamics: Understanding the behaviour of rivers, including river formations, currents, and gradient. This knowledge allows participants to anticipate potential dangers and make informed decisions during rescue situations.

Risk Assessment and Hazard Identification: Techniques for assessing the risks associated with different river features and recognizing potential hazards that could impact rescuers or victims.

Rescue Equipment and Personal Gear: Overview and proper use of essential rescue equipment including throw bags, PFDs (personal flotation devices), helmets, ropes, and other essential gear used in white water rescue scenarios.

Rope Skills: Instruction in fundamental rope rescue techniques, including knots, anchor systems, and techniques for safely moving along a rope while performing rescues in white water environments.

Swimming and Self-Rescue Techniques: Practical exercises to enhance participants’ swimming abilities in white water, as well as teaching self-rescue techniques to manage their own safety in emergency situations.

Victim Management and Rescue Techniques: Training on techniques and protocols for rescuing conscious and unconscious victims from water environments, including in-water rescues and extrication from entrapments.

Throw Bag Techniques: Instruction in effective throw bag deployments to reach and retrieve victims in white water, as well as methods for safely managing the rope system during rescue operations.

Fixed Rope Systems: Training on advanced techniques for creating, managing, and utilizing fixed rope systems in river environments, particularly in scenarios where rescuers need to traverse challenging terrain or execute complex rescues.

Scenario-Based Training: Realistic rescue scenarios and simulations to reinforce the skills and knowledge learned throughout the course. This hands-on training allows participants to apply their learning in practical situations and gain confidence in their abilities.

Risk Management and Rescue Planning: Guidance on developing comprehensive rescue plans, including risk assessment, communication, and preparedness considerations, to ensure a safe and effective response to white water r and whitewater emergencies.

 

Throughout the course, emphasis will be placed on safety, situational awareness, teamwork, and effective communication as essential components of successful water rescue operations.

FAQs

You must be a confident swimmer with experience of water-based activities such as white water rafting, pack rafting, or canoeing and kayaking.

There is 18 contact hours spread over three days

This is suitable for ages 18+

Good wetsuit or dry suit- we will be doing a lot of swimming.
Thermals
suitable footwear, water boots such as Palm gradients are ideal.
White Water Helmet
White Water PFD
Throw bags and rescue equipment.

On completion you will receive a Rescue 3 Whitewater Rescue Technician Professional (WRT pro) certificate that is valid for three years.

The course will be based from our HQ here in Llangollen at Mile End Mill, we may travel to other venues during the course.
